Andrew Paul Norton can also deal with the whole of an estate administration from notifying financial organisations of the death of a client, obtaining all necessary financial information to apply for Probate, settling the Inheritance Tax (if any) calling in all assets into our client account where it will be subject to the protection of the Solicitors’ Accounts Rules and preparing and distributing the estate to the beneficiaries after all of the liabilities have been met form the estate.
Andrew Paul Norton is a Chartered Legal Executive (CFILEx) being fully qualified for 15 years. He has been a Director at Norton Connor Solicitors since 2010.
His hourly rate is £225.00 + VAT @ 20% (total charge per hour £270.00).
Where less than one hour is involved time is recorded on a basis of units of six minutes.
Each unit costs £22.50 + VAT @ 20% total cost of each unit including VAT £27.00.

Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Finances for two people and registration at the Office of the Public Guardian, £400.00 + VAT + two registration fees of £82.00 each to total of £644.00
Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Care for one person and registration with the Office of the Public Guardian, £200.00 + VAT @ 20% + registration fee for the Office of the Public Guardian of £82.00 (no VAT) total cost £322.00
Lasting Power of Attorney for Health and Care for two people and registration with the Office of the Public Guardian, £300.00 + VAT @ 20% + registration fee for the Office of the Public Guardian of £82.00 each (£164.00) no VAT total cost £524.00
Our time scale for preparing Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney, from taking instructions to forwarding drafts to clients for approval is 14 days. When an application is made to the Office of the Public Guardian the period of time from submission to receiving the registered document is usually around 12 to 14 weeks. This time is only an estimate and may be delayed due to COVID 19.
PROBATE
Our charges to prepare an application to the Probate Registry for a Grant of Probate (where a person died leaving a Will) or an application for Letters of Administration (where some died without a Will or the Will is invalid) £500.00 + VAT there is also a Probate Registry fee of £273.00 (no VAT) for the application and £1.50 (no VAT) for each office copy of the document.
Our charges to deal with the whole of an estate where there is no land/house owned by the deceased and no Inheritance Tax payable are £1500.00 + VAT @ 20% and Probate Registry fee of £155.00 (no VAT) total cost £1955.00
Our charges to deal with an estate where there is a house/land or Inheritance Tax payable are 1% of the net value of the estate, including the deduction of any Inheritance Tax payable + my hourly rate of £225.00 + VAT @ 20% (total cost of hourly rate £270.00). There is also an Electronic Identity Verification search fee is the cost of carrying out the necessary search to verify your identity or the identity of a beneficiary - £6.90 (including VAT) per search.
When applying for a Grant of Representation you have to wait 28 days before you may submit the paperwork (unless the will has a longer date for submission such as 31 days). Realistically if we are obtaining all of the information to draft the paperwork it may take several months to compile the information.
If Inheritance Tax is payable the IHT400 should be submitted within six months from the date of death otherwise interest will be charges on any balance due to the Revenue. If the IHT400 is not submitted within 12 months of the date of death a penalty of £100.00 will be incurred.
When we are dealing with the administration of an estate we advise that it will normally take 12 months to complete the administration, however it may take longer depending upon the complexity of the matter.
COURT OF PROTECTION
When someone loses capacity to manage their financial affairs it may be necessary to appoint a Deputy upon their behalf through the Court of Protection. The legal fees for this application are fixed by the court and set out below. Fixed Costs in the Court of Protection Category I Work up to and including the date upon which the court makes an order appointing a deputy for property and affairs.
An amount not exceeding £950 (plus VAT) total cost including VAT £1140.00. There is also a application fee of £365.00 (no VAT)
Time scales for completing the application for a Deputyship Order are normally around six months from the date that the application is submitted. It may take longer to obtain the order depending upon the time it takes to obtain medical information relating to the person the application relates to. Again time scales have been increased due to Covid 19.
DEED OF VARIATION
Fixed fee of £500.00 + VAT @ 20% = £100.00 total legal costs £600.00. Land registry office copies may be required at £3.00 + VAT @20% total cost of office copies £3.60
